Dear Future Horizon Community Middle School Families,
Hello from HCMS! As we near the end of the first semester of the school year, planning is well underway for your 5th grade students to join our community next year. This is my 5th year as principal at Horizon Community, and I am so proud of where we are as a school. Some highlights include academic achievement and growth, as for the past two years we have reached the highest level of state rating based on our performance on the CMAS assessment. Further, school climate and culture are strong, and students display positive behaviors on a daily basis. Student voice is highly valued at our school, and we offer many student leadership and engagement opportunities. There are SO MANY aspects of our work that have contributed to our success as a school, and I am thrilled to share them as we welcome you and your student to the community. Like you, I am also a parent, as I have a current 7th grader at HCMS and my 5th grader will be at HCMS next year as well!
Interested in learning more about our school? Here are a few events I’d love to highlight:
1) Our upcoming Husky Highlight Night on January 28th will be a great opportunity for you and your student to visit campus to prepare for 6th grade. Please plan to be seated in the gym by 5:30pm for our welcome presentation. Following the presentation students and families will be able to tour campus, learn about many aspects of Horizon Community, and meet our teachers!
2) Peek at the PACK is an event where we invite families to observe instruction at our school and offer feedback. This event on Tuesday, February 3rd is specifically for families of incoming 6th graders. We will meet at 8:15am for a pre-brief, you will be able to observe classes from 8:50am – 10:30am, and we’ll then meet for a debrief and Q & A opportunity with members of our administrative team. Please complete this form if you’d like to join!
3) On the evening of Wednesday, February 11th we will have a guest speaker at HCMS who will be presenting on the topic of anxiety. Feeling anxious is a natural and common emotion for middle school students, and our speaker will share learnings on this topic to help us as parents support our students. There will be two sessions to choose from (5:00pm and 6:15pm). Families of incoming 6th graders are welcome to attend!
